Roval CL 50 Disc Wheelset
30018-5700
Regular price $1,750.00After designing the CLX 50s, we realized that an affordable, race-worthy carbon wheelset was nowhere to be found—until the CL 50 Disc was developed, that is. We paired our quiver-killing CLX 50 Disc rim with DT Swiss Competition round spokes, our Aero Flange Disc hubs with DT Swiss 350 internals, and steel bearings to deliver you an exceptional wheelset at a more than accessible price.
Why disc you ask? With our disc-specific rims, you not only ditch the brake track, but you get a stronger, more impact-resistant rim. This comes at the hands of a disc-specific carbon layup that optimizes stiffness and keeps weight as close to its rim-brake brethren as possible. And all the while, you get incredible brake modulation and power in all conditions.Sharing rims with the CLX 50s, the CL 50s feature many of the benefits as their higher-end siblings. Even though the CL 50 is similar in weight to many wheels in the “lightweight” category, aerodynamics came at the forefront of the development. With this, we jumped headlong into Computational Fluid Dynamics computer modeling to arrive at various rim shapes that could make the CL 50 as fast and light as possible. It took a while, but we narrowed the rim shape down to three contenders that were then CNC machined into rims, built into wheels, and put into the Win Tunnel.
In the tunnel, we tested every wheel, ours and the competition's, with a 24C tire (measuring 26C), as tires can drastically affect testing. We chose a modern-width tire to design our rims around, because they not only allow for less tire pressure (which results in more comfort and less rolling resistance) but are also just as aerodynamically efficient when paired with the correct rim width.
Now it was time for final testing validation. The result? A 50mm-deep, 1515-gram clincher wheelset that's race-ready and wallet-friendly.
Roval Control 29 Carbon Wheelset
30118-1929
Regular price $1,200.00It’s not often that “affordable” and “carbon” appear in the same sentence, but our Control 29 Carbon wheelset was designed to change that. Using many of the same techniques used in the development of the SL iteration of the Control 29, these wheels provide the lightweight XC performance you need at a more attainable price.
Creating a successful XC wheelset isn't as easy as you might think. Often times, keeping a wheel light, stiff, and strong requires an unlimited budget, so when we were asked to create a wheel that had low inertia and weight but was also strong enough to take on rocks and roots, wide enough so that the tire profile was optimized for both traction and rolling resistance, and most importantly, was affordable, we knew that we had our work cut out for us.
We started with the notion of keeping these wheels as close to their SL brethren as possible. With this, we explored what made the SLs so awesome in the first place and implemented nearly every aspect of them. Starting with the rim, we kept our renowned Zero Hook Bead that allows for continuous fiber layup across the sidewall and rim bed. We then paired it with a wide 22-millimeter internal, 27-millimeter external profile makes it resilient to impact and creates a tire profile that’s conducive to low rolling resistance and incredible traction.
On the trail, these technical traits translate to a wheelset that many XC riders have grown to love—quick accelerations on punchy climbs, swift stopping that lets you leave braking till the last second, and unprecedented reliability. Combine this with our easy to set-up 2Bliss system and you have a reliable XC wheel that’s as easy to climb on as it is to set-up.
To go along with the rim, we made sure to keep the lightweight, reliable, and affordable features in mind when building the wheelset, so we took our proven alloy hubs that feature DT Swiss 350 internals at the rear and hand-laced them with 32 DT Swiss revolution spokes. Finding hand-built wheels is becoming more and more difficult, but we're fully vested in the power of the human touch. When a wheel is machine-built, there are certain margins of error that are built into the system that result in inconsistencies. With a real person building your wheels, you're sure to have a wheelset free of imperfections. And even better, the Control Carbon gives you this in one sub-1600-gram, trail-ready wheelset.
If you’re on the hunt for a wheelset that meets both your riding and financial expectations, the Control Carbon 29 is a trophy find.
Roval Control 29 Wheelset
30119-1100
Regular price $650.00 Sale price $599.95When you think of lightweight XC wheels, aluminum probably doesn't come to mind. In reality, though, high-grade alloy wheels have all of the tremendous performance properties found in carbon, like light overall weight, durability, and resilience to impact. And when made with the right hands, they're perfect for competitive racers and everyday trail riders alike. The problem is that, while many carbon wheels can check these boxes with ease, most alloy wheels don't live up to these expectations. In the case of the Control 29 wheels, however, there’s finally an aluminum wheelset that's truly ready to race.
What sets the Control 29 wheels apart is that they share many of the same advanced technologies as our carbon version, the Control SL. They adopt the same rim shape with a 25-millimeter inner width, extensive on-trail testing, and our Zero Bead Hook technology.
Our Zero Bead Hook rim takes away the dated mountain wheel design known as a bead hook. This hook is the part of the rim that crests at the top, sitting several millimeters inward from the rim’s sidewall, and it catches the tire’s bead under its hook. We know this may not sound too bad, but the hook establishes a weak spot in the rim that's easily crushed or bent. Without a hook, a rim can be manufactured to much tighter tolerances and can be made lighter due to the hook not needing to be reinforced. For these wheels, this means that we're able to nearly equal the strength of carbon, while also making them lighter than many carbon wheels. More importantly, a Zero Bead Hook all but gets rid of the aforementioned weak spot in the rim that's plagued riders with flat spots and dents for decades. If you happen to be one of those riders that enjoys riding your four-inch travel XC bike like it’s a six-inch trail bike, you’re in luck.
Our objective of low weight and reliability, at an accessible price, also carries into the Control 29 build. We hand-build each rim to our alloy hubs, which feature DT Swiss internals at the rear and a design that allows for the same spoke lengths at both front and rear, via perfectly tensioned DT Swiss Revolution J-Bend spokes and Pro Lock nipples. We fully support the art of hand-building and do so with our wheels, knowing that real people can catch things that a machine simply cannot.

30016-7102
Regular price $1,100.00When we set out to create a wheelset built purely for speed, we wanted to make it more than just fast. Not that being fast wasn’t a priority, but we were tired of wheels that only performed well in a straight line. In the end, we developed the CLX 64—the fastest wheel that we've ever tested. Not only is it the fastest in the tunnel, but its prestige has been verified with Gold Medals in the men’s road race, time trial, and team time trial at the 2016 UCI World Championships.
One of the first questions we get about the CLX 64 is, “Why 64mm instead of 65mm?” To put it simply, it's because 64mm simply tested faster than 65mm. One millimeter—that's how deep our testing goes. Having an in-house wind tunnel allows us to run every possible variation, and after two years of development, 80 variations in rim design, and nearly 300 hours studying tire and frame interactions in the Win Tunnel, we found 64mm to be the fastest iteration for normal riding conditions. In fact, it's even faster than the 80-plus-millimeter-deep wheels they were tested against. Being able to use a shape that’s nearly 20mm shallower than the competition, yet just as low in drag, makes for a wheel that has drastically less side force and steering torque. This translates to less buffeting and more confidence in even the gustiest winds.
Another positive of a shallower rim depth is the reduction in weight that follows using less material. Many deep carbon wheels feel “slow” due to their high inertia value. What's that? Inertia is the amount of force it takes to accelerate or decelerate, and wheels that are built around heavier rims lack the liveliness that many riders crave. Being over a half-a-pound lighter than the other wheels in its aero category, the CLX 64 accelerates, decelerates, and changes direction with less effort.
The rim is not the only component of the CLX 64 that contributes to its aero prowess though—in order to create the fastest wheels, we focused on the wheels as a system, not just a rim with “other parts,” and our Aero Flange (AF) hubs play a significant role. Designed completely in the Win Tunnel, our AF hubs feature an incredibly small frontal aero, without sacrificing stiffness, making them aerodynamically efficient.
Taking the advantage a step further, these wheels were developed to work in harmony with modern-width 24C tires. The 21mm internal rim width spreads the tire out, in this case to 26C, making it seamlessly meet the rim. Not only does this create a system with low aerodynamic drag, but one that has exceptionally low rolling resistance and inspiring grip in the corners. And to make sure we checked all of the feature boxes, we also made the rim tubeless-ready.
To top off the multitude of performance features of the rim, we chose the highest quality build components to pair the CLX 64 rear with. Starting with 21 DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spokes, which test faster than their round counterparts in the Win Tunnel, we hand-laced the 64 rim to our AF hubs that house CeramicSpeed’s legendary bearings and DT 240 hub internals. Why hand-built? Machines make mistakes and mistakes aren't something we're ok with, so we have real people lace each wheel by hand.
