OUR STORY
In 1986, David Torrellas (founder and president of Bike Stop) began practicing mountain biking and instantly fell in love with this new discipline. During his involvement in the sport, both recreationally and competitively, he noticed the need for a high-end store focusing on the latest trends in cycling and the local market. This led to the establishment of Bike Stop, which opened its doors in 1988. Over the years, the company has gone through different stages of development, evolving from a retail store to a wholesale distributor with the backing of renowned brands like Specialized and FOX.
During the early years, the popularity of this sport led to other entrepreneurs having the same idea, resulting in an excess of bike shops in the metropolitan area. "At one point, we had 10 competitors within a 15-mile radius," comments David Torrellas. After 5 years, many of these shops closed, providing more opportunities for the development of Bike Stop.
In 1996, the second phase of business development involved evaluating the possibility of entering the wholesale distribution business for more immediate growth. This decision entailed a greater investment and risk, but according to Torrellas, it was the only sensible path to follow. During this pursuit, the opportunity to acquire the SPECIALIZED line arose, covering not only bicycles but also an extensive range of accessories (shoes, helmets, gloves, saddles, and cycling apparel). This was a pivotal moment in Bike Stop's development. "Having the support of a globally renowned brand like Specialized, we have been fortunate to receive not only sales support but also assistance in all other essential aspects that make a company successful (marketing, finances, education, etc.)," comments the founder of Bike Stop.
The acquisition of the FOX suspension brand in 2008 made Bike Stop the exclusive FOX Service Center in Puerto Rico. In response to continuous requests from their stores, Bike Stop initiated a technical workshop program for handling FOX suspensions, gaining significant support from bike shops across the island.
Bike Stop's proactive response to the global pandemic in 2020, recognizing the need for a stronger online presence, once again demonstrates the company's agility and strategic vision. The transformation of the website has become an essential part of the business, offering exclusive promotions, FIT appointments, and bike rentals. On the social front, Bike Stop remains actively involved in assisting different groups maintaining mountain bike routes in Puerto Rico. Additionally, the company participates as a collaborator and/or sponsor in many recreational and competitive events across various cycling disciplines. Bike Stop's continuous engagement in social initiatives and sports events underscores its commitment to the cycling community in Puerto Rico.
In summary, Bike Stop's history is a testament to passion, entrepreneurial vision, and adaptability over the years, making it a prominent figure in the cycling world in Puerto Rico.
